Juneau (population 30,000) is Alaska’s capital. Kayaks and gear may be carried aboard and stored on Alaska’s ferries, or shipped aboard Alaska Airlines.
Fly on Alaska Airlines to Juneau. Two hour non stop flights are available from Anchorage, Seattle, or Portland. Or, take the Alaska Marine Highway from Bellingham, Washington or Prince Rupert British Columbia to Juneau. Secure lodging near Juneau International Airport or begin paddle from the Auke Bay ferry terminal or the airport. Overnight accommodations are plentiful near the airport.
Paddle the Channel Islands. This trip allows for much flexibility. It can be done in one day or as a multi day paddle/camping trip. Or, it can last for several weeks as there are infinite islands and fiords to explore around Juneau. Expect to see an abundance of birds and other wildlife, glaciers, and old growth spruce & hemlock forests.
Juneau’s historic downtown is 8 miles south of the airport and 13 miles south of the Auke Bay ferry terminal. You can paddle to downtown, secure your kayaks in one of Juneau’s downtown harbors, and enjoy a day or more exploring some of the many upland attractions of Juneau on foot or take a taxi or bus tour. Hotel & B&B; accommodations are plentiful in downtown Juneau.
Paddle back to the airport or ferry terminal for your trip home.
