Sample Itineraries

Haines-Skagway: 7 Days

Day 1

Stop the world — you’re getting off! Arrive in Juneau via Alaska Airlines. Over-night to re-group from travel; visit Mendenhall Glacier, ride the Mt. Roberts tram, enjoy seeing the State capital.

Day 2

(Fast) ferry to Haines. Settle in at B & B. Walk or pick up rental car to visit Sheldon Museum, Dalton City (former “White Fang” film set) with microbrewery, numerous artists’ studios & shops, etc. Reconnoiter local restaurants & friendly pubs for fresh seafood or variety of dining options.

Day 3

Drive to Mt. Riley trailhead 2.5 miles south of Haines on Chilkat Peninsula. Hike 2.8 Miles (5.6 RT) through forest and sub-alpine terrain to 1760′ summit on center of peninsula. Take in glorious 360 degree view of surrounding waterways including Upper Lynn Canal and Chilkat River valley.

Day 4

Hitch 30′ ride on water taxi to Skagway. Take the amazing 1/2-day Whitepass Narrow Gauge train ride to Fraser. Tour historic Skagway National Gold Rush Park. Return to Haines via water taxi.

Day 5

Set out early on 9.8 mile, 4700′ vertical gain Mt. Ripinsky traverse. (Arrange for drop-off or pick-up at 7-Mile trailhead or city trailhead.) Enjoy a rigorous but so rewarding trek including 5-mile meander across “Little Switzerland”-like alpine meadows, with sweeping world-class views of unclimbed peaks. You may well be rewarded with bear and/or mountain goat sightings. Watch the eagles ride warm air currents below you!

Day 6

A rest day! Sign on to river or rafting tour and let local guides show you the wondrous Chilkat Valley. Shop for mementos, fine art, etc. Begin planning a much longer visit next time.

Day 7

Catch whale-watching catamaran tour to Juneau. Marvel at eagles, sea lions, and humpback whales. Prepare to take leave of Paradise.
