Skagway

Hoonah is the largest Tlingit village in Alaska and one of the newest SEAtrails members.

Overview

Hoonah has a population of about 850 people. Commercial fishing plays an important role in their local economy. Icy Strait Point is a major tourism development hosting no more than one cruise ship per day.

Transportation

Hoonah is located 40 miles west of Juneau on northeastern Chichagof Island, just across Icy Strait from Glacier Bay. Hoonah is accessible by water and small plane. Alaska’s Marine Highway System services Hoonah with the M/V LeConte. Juneau is the primary domestic air entry point for Southeast Alaska and travelers on the Inside Passage and is a 30-minute commuter flight from Hoonah.

Hoonah is a full service SEAtrails community with a range of accommodations, eateries, rental facilities for both vehicles and outdoor equipment, and medical and emergency facilities.

Weather

Hoonah has a cool, temperate marine environment. Summer temperatures average 52 to 63 °F; winter temperatures hover around freezing. Precipitation averages 100 inches annually, with 71 inches of snowfall. .
