Situk Lake Trail

Summary:

This trail provides access to a Forest Service cabin located on Situk Lake. The cabin has a boat and lifejackets available for use on the lake. The trail traverses muskeg and old growth forest ecosystems and provides access to excellent sport fishing opportunities as well as possible encounters with bears and moose. The trail has outstanding views of the Brabazon Mountains and on good visibility days Mount Saint Elias is visible from the lake. Portions of this trail have been recently upgraded through the wettest areas. The cabin is located at the end of the trail and the Mountain Lake trail then continues 2.0 miles from the cabin to Mountain Lake. Reservations for Situk Lake cabin are available at Recreation.gov.

Difficulty:

Some low-lying areas are prone to flooding, depending on ground saturation and precipitation. This trail is in prime moose and bear habitat.

Starting Point:

From Yakutat, drive Forest Highway #10 (Dangerous River Road) east towards Harlequin Lake approximately 11.5 miles. Turn left on East Gate Road and follow East Gate Road 3.5 miles. Turn left (only left turn on East Gate Road) and drive 3.0 miles. The road will terminate at the Situk Lake Trail trailhead.
